From Goals to Guns

Hungary’s national soccer team, winner of the gold medal in the 1952 Olympic Games, was undefeated between 1950 and 1954. In addition to providing a unique chapter in the history of soccer, it was the proudest achievement of the postwar Communist era.

The Hungarian team’s defeat by West Germany in the final match of the 1954 World Cup unleashed nationwide demonstrations which were early signs of the anto-Communist Revolution of 1956. Handler has based his work on Hungarian sources including interviews with the players and officials of the team.

Customer Review: this book is garbage
Lauffer, writes a simple, and useless tactical book. Its contents could have been written by a 10 year old girl. After seing this man coach in action, he is complete crap and should never ever be giving advice to ANYONE on the game,
cheers

Wonder Goal!

Wonder Goal! Wonder Goal!

He shoots! He scores! It was perfect.Head over the ball, balance, power, timing . . .As soon as he kicked it, he knew it was going to be a goal.Wonder Goal! is all about this perfect shot, the fantasy shot that haunts the dreams of all soccer players – young and old – whether their game is taking place on a freezing cold roadside soccer field or in front of thousands of cheering fans in the final match of the World Cup. With a stirring, simple text and glorious watercolors, Michael Foreman brings the fantasy to life in a picture book that captures both the drama and the magic of the most popular game in the world.

Customer Review: Good for Introducing Big Goals
I agree with the reviewer who said the story was “confusing.” I intend to use it as a read-aloud to introduce my class’ big goals for the year, as I am a 5th grade teacher in New York. However, upon delving into the story, I, too, could not figure out if the boy was really playing in the World Cup final or just dreaming about it. I did not get in which game he was actually scoring a goal. Of course, the point is that everyone can have big goals and dreams, and see them to reality if they persevere. Hopefully, I can elicit student reactions without getting bogged down with the text. I can probably spur on some interesting discussion among students as to what the author’s intentions were. I would welcome others’ suggestions on 5th grade level books to share or read independently.
Customer Review: 3 1/2 Exciting Soccer Drama, But Slightly Confusing
With the Cup being played this year, Americans will once again renew their tenuous relationship with soccer. For some kids and adults, however, soccer is an enduring love, and they’re just as enthusiastic–if not as rich in tradition, as their soccer-loving counterparts in other countries. Michael’s Foreman’s imaginative (both literally and figuratively) text and witty illustrations convey how children everywhere dream of attaining big goals (pun intended).
